Intellectual Nourishment

The nice part about living in a small town is that when you don't know what you are doing, someone else does.

Thank you for your donations. I was ready to buy rubber bands and that is what I received. I really appreciate the support and it makes me smile.

Letter to Editor:

Hi Sara Laub:
My name is Willi Leavitt Christensen. I live in Salt Lake. I come from a long line of Leavitt's. My Father was born in Gunlock. He is the brother of 17 children. (Vern Leavitt was my favorite uncle) I grew up spending a lot of my childhood in Gunlock and St George. I usually stayed with Rose and Glen Mcallister.
Judy Mcallister Hart is my cousin, who is exactly my age. I e-mail Maryellen Hunt Strong quite a bit, as she
e-mails me with interesting news and she has sent me this Gunlock Informer today. I would appreciate it if you would include me on the list. I so enjoy reading about what is going on down south. I was in Gunlock in September attending Glen Mcallister's funeral, but I was also able to spend time with MaryEllen and go to Gunlock for a visit with Jesse Hunt and MaryEllen.
My best memories of my childhood are Gunlock and St. George. Just warms my heart to hear about what is going on these days.

Publishing Ideas

By Sara Laub
I am interested in having more articles, pictures, recipes, or ideas from residents in town to help fill the newsletter. I want to hear about what you are interested in. I can either take a topic that you are interested in and write about it for you, or publish one you do yourself. I want to make sure I am writing about things that Gunlock is interested in. Please call or email me at 574-2641 thegunlockinformer@gmail.com. Thanks!

Reply to the November News

Thanks for your newsletter.
I just wanted to tell you of one of the funniest Halloween parties I remember. I think the year was 1949, everyone had gathered at the "Old church house" for fun and games. All the benches were pushed back against the wall. Everyone in town dressed up. My mom, Jessie Hunt, said she wasn't feeling well and would not be attending and she was going to bed. So we all went without her. In those days there was not such a thing as bought masks, and costumes, you had to come up with your own which was really a fun part of it.
So we are all having a great time when in through the front door came this old man and woman. They were kind of like bums/tramps. They went around poking people and laughing this hideous laugh. When finally they "unveiled." It was MY MOTHER and MILT HOLT.
Oh how we all laughed. It was certainly "THE" talk of the town for weeks. I thought you might enjoy that little story.

Good Deeds in Gunlock

By Ann Gasparac
I wanted to point out some of the good things that I see going on in Gunlock. There are many people making our community great and clean!
Reed Leavitt was cleaning up Ed Bowler’s property and taking down the willows and a dilapidated shed with all its junk, and added dirt to the berm on the river, which will help in times of flooding. It really looks nice.
Joseph Smith mowed the lawn at the Town Hall and the park. Thanks Joe! And he was spotted at Peterson’s with the lawn mower too.
Derrick Laub picked up garbage along side the road. He filled 5 grocery sacks full!
The Fransis Leavitt grandkids were spotted cleaning up her yard. Nice work.
Many thanks to all those who help our community.
Editors Note: If you spot a good deed in Gunlock, then let me know. I’ll put them in the coming newsletters.

Questions and Answers

Q: I own a small parcel of land in Gunlock and everytime I come up to stay for a bit, I see more and more abandon vehicles in yards lining the street into Gunlock. Could you find out the County ordinance against keeping abandon autos on your property and what we can do to ask the owners to please respect the beauty of this little village!

_Bonnie Gabriel
San Diego, CA
A: The Washington County Code's definition of a junk car is "any used car or motor vehicle not in the process of reconditioning, which has been abandoned for use as a motor vehicle on a public highway and which is in unsafe operating condition and shall have remained in such condition for a period in excess of thirty (30) days; or portions of junk cars, such as hoods, fenders, radiators, rims, motors, hubcaps, etc., not being immediately utilized in the repair of a motor vehicle."
The regulations state "storage of rubbish prohibited: no person, firm or corporation shall deposit, store, maintain, collect or permit the storage, deposit, maintenance or collection of any junk, junk cars or rubbish, or cars that are unregistered or cars with expired license plates on his own premises or any premises it or they own or use under his or their control, or in any other place within the county, except as is expressly provided by law."
After speaking with a Fifth Circuit Court judge, it was confirmed that, as stated in the County Code, that this is a blue law to make sure that people get rid of their old cars which they are not going to use anymore. Those that are restoring vehicles do not fall into this category. There are advertisements in several local papers that say they will pay you to haul off your junk vehicle. Contact Sara Laub for more detailed information.
Q: Why are there so many dogs running loose, unattended in Gunlock? I just want to know what the county codes are for pets.
_Ann Gasparac
Gunlock
A: The Washington County Code states that every dog and cat has to be vaccinated for rabies and wear their rabies tag on their collar by four months of age if they are on public property (i.e. sidewalks, streets, parks, etc.). Owners are to keep their animal(s) off the premises of another person. A note to the wise, if an animal is causing a problem, mainly destruction or is a threat, on another person's property, that person has the right to call the pound, police, or take care of the destruction of the animal themselves. Diseased or injured animals must be taken care of and not allowed to roam, otherwise they will be deemed abandoned are to be destroyed by the owner with precaution to preventing the spread of illness.

Citizen Comment

I’m thrilled to hear that someone is trying to keep everyone informed of what is going on!!! Thanks so much.

Mary Ellen S.

Sara,

Enjoyed the newsletter immensely! You and Rachel did a great job putting it together. I think it is a great idea. I would only wish that it could be mailed out each month instead of being placed at the mailboxes. They could conveniently disappear or the wind could blow them over to Mesquite. You have our support in this new adventure. Being informed as to what is going on is key - a little unity wouldn’t hurt this town at all either.

Jane O.

To The Gunlock Informer,

I want to thank all who attended the GSSD meeting for their positive comments on the town park. I want to especially thank Sara Laub for The Gunlock Informer. I am happy there were decisions made to keep the park. I hope we can get playground equipment for all of us to play on. I hope that we can find someone to take over the soda machine.
