The nice part about living in a small town is that when you don't know what you are doing, someone else does.

May GSSD

By Kevin Laub
The Northwestern Special Service District (NWSSD) board came to the May GSSD meeting. The main purpose was to try to find out what to do with the fire station in Gunlock. The problems discussed included:

• There is not enough qualified personnel to run the Gunlock Fire Station at the moment or to qualify as a fire station
• There is not a fire station (except the garage)
• The station needs to be within 5 miles of the town to qualify for good insurance rates
• The ISO does not recognize Gunlock has a fire department
• People are not joining and keeping the Gunlock fire department running

Discussion of different solutions included:
• Possibly being part of Ivins Fire Department (that means Gunlock will be subject to their fees and the issue of having a station 5 miles away will have to be resolved)
• Put money in to build a station for Gunlock by the NWSSD (but that would require having enough people in Gunlock to run the station)
• Put money in the Veyo station to build it up to support Gunlock
• Find a way to get more people to join the department

A survey will be put out by the GSSD for the residents of Gunlock to fill out to hear their opinions on what should be done with the Gunlock Fire Department.
Other items discussed during the GSSD meeting were the Brady meter was replaced by Dusty Leavitt, they received the fine notice from the EPA for $1,000, all testing logs are current and up to date. Smith’s will remain in the district (with 1.3 acre feet for their well) but will not receive water from the GSSD. They will be completely separated from the district water. June 1st is the date for the disconnection, which involves all water lines physically disconnected. The pipes will be unhooked and GSSD pipe will be put in to go completely around them. It will cost about $5,000 to complete the disconnection.

Flood repairs have been underway but are not completely finished, and it is turning out to be about $41,000. They have one more plugged line to repair and wanted to wait until the Ironman finished to make the connection from the well to the spring.

Ways to Observe Memorial Day

A new poll commissioned by the National WWII Museum reveals the nation is in danger of forgetting the real meaning of Memorial Day. According to the poll, 80 percent of Americans confess to having “little,” or only “some” knowledge of the military holiday. Only 20 percent of respondents claim to be “very familiar” with the day and its purpose.
Indeed, for most people, Memorial Day signals the unofficial start of summer, picnics and outdoor fun, instead of a day to remember and honor the men and women who have died in military service.
“Our poll is very revealing,” said The National WWII Museum President and CEO Gordon H. “Nick” Mueller. “More than 416,800 American servicemen and women died in World War II. Today, with Americans fighting in Afghanistan, a time to honor those who give their lives for their country has never been more urgent.”
To help educate all Americans on Memorial Day’s importance, The National WWII Museum has launched a new website www.mymemorialday.org, which recommends simple ways to commemorate the holiday. Some of their suggestions include:
*Write a veteran and thank them for their service to the nation
*Place an American flag on the grave of a veteran
*Visit a military museum or historic military site
*Help organize a school or community-wide observance
*Honor a veteran on Facebook, change your profile picture into an American flag
*Write a letter to the editor of your local newspaper to remind those in your community about the true meaning of Memorial Day

Easter in Gunlock

By Sara Laub
The Gunlock Park was filled with eggs and children. As each child ran to fill up their Easter basket, they carefully found just one shiny egg to turn in for a prize. As the egg hunt subsided, baskets were bulging and prizes were given of cartons of egg-shaped bubble gum. The park has the fastest clean up rate during this event. Many smiles were on the children’s faces, which determined the success of this great Easter Egg Hunt. Thank you to the Gunlock Rodeo Committee for making this possible!

In Memorium

Have you ever looked, really looked, at a soldier's face? Sometimes it's young, barely
an adult the hopes of youth still painted in its features. Sometimes it's old older than faith, older than wisdom, older than time. And sometimes...sometimes it's a bit of both all at once.
Sometimes it's gritty and pained, remembering the face of another who has fallen. Sometimes it's laughing, pleased to have a moment of peace. Most of the time it's proud because it knows, oh yes it knows, the world is a different place a better place because of it.
Next time you look at a soldier's face, see if you can find that glint of pride. Sometimes it’s hidden, and you have to search it out. You'll find it in the eyes always in the eyes. For the eyes are indeed the windows to the soul, even a soldier's soul.
And when you've carefully examined every feature of that soldier's face, stand up straight and tall and smile your best smile. Thank that soldier, because it does what some cannot or will not. It defends what it believes to be right with it's very life. But more important, it defends a perfect stranger you.
And when you see a flag covered casket, stand in memorium of all the soldier's faces you've examined. For when one of them falls, they all fall. And when one of them stands, they all stand.
Shouldn't we stand with them?
